Position Statement

Apple Valley deserves a candidate who understands children. Why I am choosing to run for Board member for AVUSD trustee

As a retired educator from Apple Valley Unified School District, Apple Valley has been my home for over 33 years. My children and I have been beneficiaries of quality education when Apple Valley was one of the top two districts in the area. Now, Apple Valley School District is ranking 5th and 6th. To retain teachers, salaries and benefit packages must be competitive with neighboring districts. Ongoing effective staff developments and service delivery must be in line with the most current effective teaching practices.

Our children deserve high quality education by first attracting and maintaining quality teachers and support staff. In light of school violence, we must ensure that our schools have needed resources to continue to protect our children, staff, and community from any violence including protecting the rights of all children.

The special populations and the diverse student bodies must be at the forefront of our school community. Parent trainings and resources regarding their responsibilities and rights, should be a regular service provided at the district level. Students with special needs deserve the same opportunities when possible as their non-disabled counterparts. Family involvement in making decisions should be encouraged as much as possible. The behavior standards for our students should be revamped to be uniform within the district and stakeholders should be involved in designing effective strategies. There should be meaningful and impactful discussions with all stakeholders in a community based learning environment.

As a board member, it is important that Apple Valley Unified School District returns to their status of children first. It is important that we focus on the eight priority elements from the state regarding Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).  I will be visible at our schools, listen to the stakeholders, and report back to the community to ensure that continuous problem solving dialogue is present. I will attend regularly scheduled board meetings and will work to obey the guidelines of meeting procedures.
