Biography

I'm Blair Daniels, a Marine Corps widow and the mother of two sons, John and Shawn, both adult professional men in the Oceanside community. I've spent most of my life serving others. For years I was volunteer for the Family Service Center at Camp Pendleton and also worked with Jon-profit organization in Oceanside when our neighborhoods were over run with gang members and criminal activity. Upon graduating from college I worked as an active intern with the San Diego Probation Department and continued working with at-risk youth as a coordinator for an a.etrnative education program. I currently work with the San Diego Jumane Society as a volunteer foster mother for kittens and devote my time towards the betterment of our community. It would be an honor to serve our children and families as a board member on the Oceanside Unified School District Board of Efucation. My transition from the classroom to the boardroom will be very smooth and I'll take a contemporary teaching experience with me, knowing the immediate needs of our children. Thank you for your support and vote on Election Day.

Questions & Answers

Questions from League of Women Voters of California Education Fund (1)

A recent law made major changes in the way that the state allocates funding to schools. What will you do to ensure that the public understands your local control formula for school spending and your plan to measure outcomes?
Answer from Blair Daniels:

I am campaigning for Proposition 55 to continue taxing the wealthiest Californians to ensure that the funds go directly into the classrooms and not towards administration or bureaucracy. I'll scrutinize the allocation of funds for all costs to determine how our dollars are spent, where, if specified, funding is directed towards specific programs and gauge whether or not theseprograms are effective in regards to the students. I'll also work with the administration and district personnel to examine the LCAP and prioritize funding towards students, classroom materials, and staff. My priorities, especially after spending the last 20 years in the classroom, must be students, families, and programs that will assist in the success of all of our children, academically, socially, and emeotionally.

Questions from League of Women Voters of North County San Diego (1)

What is the most significant challenge facing the Oceanside Unified School District, and if you are elected, what steps will you take to address it?
Answer from Blair Daniels:

I believe that Oceanside Unified School District has some challenges that we can remedy by working together and setting our priorities. The most challenging problem that we are currently facing is providing adequate options for student to who do not plan on attending college. Many of our classes, especially in high school are designed for college prep, but our vocational and technological options for students are very limited. I'd like to see us serve all children in the district by offering many more classes in the arts, trade, and technology. Our data indicates that about 40% of our students are prepared for four-year colleges and universities. The remaining 60% are being short changed by our diehard believe that all students are college bound. We need to offer alternatives to college and work very closely with our community colleges to prepare our children for two year degree programs and vocational training and internships.

Political Beliefs

Political Philosophy

Oceanside has been my home for forty years. I've spent the past twenty years teaching U.S. History to students at Jefferson Middle School. I know, first-hand, the challenges our children face on a regular basis. Students deserve safe campuses and strong academic curriculum supported by responsive teachers and supplemental opportunities outside of the classroom. Our parents need additional resources to assist their children with the common core curriculum.

As a proud Marine Corps widow and mother of two sons, I will take my experience as a teacher, a mother, and an advocate for our children from the classroom to the boardroom. I'll work to protect and improve the quality of our children’s education in preparation for college and career in the global community. I'll afford parents and constituents easy access to procedures, policies, and information, addressing your concerns promptly.  I'll hold the district leadership accountable for every dollar spent to ensure it positively impacts students' learning.    It would be an honor and privilege to serve you, my Oceanside neighbors, as a member of the OUSD Board of Education. Endorsed by the Oceanside Teachers Association and North County Labor Alliance, a vote for Blair is a voice for you!
