Biography

I have lived and worked in Oceanside for over 40 years and I truly love this City and all that it offers.

I worked for the City of Oceanside for over 30 years in the planning and economic development arenas and have seen the City grow to become a very vibrant community with a wealth of good housing, jobs, recreation facilities and wonderful cultural attractions.

i was instrumental in the establishment of many of our joint use neighborhood school and park facilities such as Chavez Middle School and Mance Buchannon Park and Martin Luther Kimg Middle School and Park next to Ivey Ranch school.

i was involved in the origination and establishment of the master planning effort to build ElCorazon Park, with its Senior Citizens Center and its world class 22 field sports/soccer complex, which brings thousands of families to Oceanside from all over Southern California and beyond.

I am proud of the work I have done on the school board the past 8 years, working collectively with our excellent School Board Superintendent Duane Coleman, fellow board members, our teachers, support staff, parents and kids to bring the best possible education and classroom support facilities to the community, which we richly deserve.

Questions & Answers

Questions from League of Women Voters of California Education Fund (1)

A recent law made major changes in the way that the state allocates funding to schools. What will you do to ensure that the public understands your local control formula for school spending and your plan to measure outcomes?
Answer from Mike Blessing:

The Oceanside School District has aggressively reached out to parents and teachers, support staff and community organizations to gather input in forming our funding plans in accordance with the new state law.  Progress is constantly being made in reaching  consensus on the best approaches to reaching all of our kids and meeting their educational needs.

Questions from League of Women Voters of North County San Diego (1)

What is the most significant challenge facing the Oceanside Unified School District, and if you are elected, what steps will you take to address it?
Answer from Mike Blessing:

Our most significant challenge is serving all the wide ranging needs of over 18,000 students and their families with excellent teachers, the best facilities and necessary classroom support materials.  I will continue to work hard to bring the best to all of our schools.
